Gilenya, approved for Relapsing MS

WEDNESDAY, September 22, HealthDay News – Gilenya (fingolimod) has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to reduce relapses and slows the progression of disability in people with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis.


Drug abuse is one of the new class of drugs designed to block certain blood cells in lymph nodes, slows cells commuting to the spinal cord, the Agency said in a news release.


Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, disabling nervous system disease that affects some people in the United States occupation and 2.1 million globally, "said FDA.Symptoms can vary from mild to severe limb numbness problems such as paralysis or visual impairments.


Gilenya can have serious side effects, including reducing the heartbeat, shortly after started on drugs, "said FDA. other adverse reactions may include a greater risk of infection and macular edema of the eyes. patients requiring drugs should be made for these terms.


Most frequently reported drug side effects include headache, influenza, diarrhea, pain in the back, cough and elevated liver enzymes, said the Agency.


Gilenya is made by Novartis, based in Basel, Switzerland.
