March is nutrition month and like you, the American Dietetic Association logo for this event is "Food from the ground up" encouraging can see

Our blog theme fit healthy foods on a budget this year's theme, because the month of March is to start the perfect opportunity to plan for ways to think get to good nutrition and food cost reduction through gardening or access local foods could start next season.

A range check, healthy foods to get is to grow your own food. What a fun way to know where your food comes actually for to start in your garden or on a community garden by a garden. I must admit, a bit hassle and more than just an area ditch and seed gathering information appears.Make sure that your floor is secure and free of lead or other contaminants, often in urban gardening werden.Hier found are some links to check out for garden and to ensure a safe and healthy start.

The Boston natural areas network (BNAN) can provide many information about gardening in Boston: http://www.bostonnatural.org/ also BNAN is a garden's gathering on Saturday, March 20, 2010 11 AM-5 PM at Northeastern University re-start is event many local Garden have resources and information.

The food project is another great resource to the ground to test, create a raised bed gardens and other tips: http://thefoodproject.org/local-food

Somewhere else if you want to support local food and produce has to examine, accession of the community support agricultural (CSA).In the last 20 years become community supported agriculture (CSA) is a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics like a CSA works:

A farmer offers a certain number of "Shares" the public. typically share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products can buy involved consumers contribute (aka "membership" or "Subscription") werden.Interessierte and several rewards get created a box (bag, basket) of seasonal products in return every week during the agriculture Saison.Diese arrangement for both the consumer and the farmer.

Benefits for farmers:

Spend time marketing of foods that grow in the spring, before long days in the field payment of BeginReceive early in the season, which helps with the farm cash flow and ability to do companies have their opportunity, to know the people to eat that you grow the food

Advantages for consumers:

Ultra fresh food or organic as the grown with minimal pesticide food, with all the advantages, flavor and vitamin food, grown LocallyGet new vegetables and new ways of CookingFind children usually enjoy you never known food from "Your" farm - even vegetables, you have been exposed to develop a relationship with the farmer to eat your food growing and learn how food is grown

While the cost join a CSA first challenging is to have the most CSA payment plans to families / individuals at the cost to enable anpassen.Zum example, CSA a family would $ 400 costs but the actual costs only $ 26 per week for 15 weeks fresh organic local grown fruit and vegetables, this is much less than what a consumer for the same amount of organic products in the supermarket would pay.

Join a CSA is a simple enough idea, but their impact has been profound, because not only will you always be local fresh produce, but you, support farmers and work towards building a sustainable agriculture industry, which is what we all want the Zukunft.Wenn you are interested in, click the CSA the Boston areas serve: Massachusetts_CSA_DirectoryBoston

If these options not what are you ready for that at this time still capable nutritious food from the ground up by going to the local farmers ' markets if you start in June. This is a great way to local buy products without it grows, Beitritt.Viele of markets take themselves or a CSA to support electronic debt transfer (EBT) with Food Stamps.Boston has the advantage of bounty bucks, the value of using your food stamps at framers ' markets increase to learn more about farmers ' click markets and bounty bucks on: http://thefoodproject.org/boston-bounty-bucks.

So take the time this month to make ways that you can plan for the next growing season and benefit in any way that fits for you to have healthy food, to support the food from the ground up.

Is more than a tax reduction smell diseases, crime?

ON THURSDAY, September 23, health.com — abuse of alcohol is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and it contributes to numerous diseases, car crashes, injuries and crimes. How can we resolve the Thorny problems? Make more expensive + can be a good start, offers a new experience.

Doubling the current state of taxes on alcohol — which would tack in as much as 50 cents for the price of the average six-pack or a bottle of wine – it can be expected to reduce alcohol-related deaths by 35%, fatal car crashes by 11% and the dimensions of the disease by 6%, according to the survey.

Forecast for higher taxes on + also lead to less violence and 2% 1.4% less crime investigators.

What is surprising, the sequence of the effect of a wide range of health outcomes that kind of have nothing to do with each other, "says Alexander c. Wagenaar, PhD, lead investigator and Professor of epidemiology and health outcomes in the University of Florida in Gainesville.

If the State alcohol taxes are doubled, six tax-pack or a bottle of wine would increase with anywhere from a few cents to 50 cents depending on the status and tax standard bottle of liquor may go by several dollars. (If federal taxes are doubled, instead, the increase will be about 30 cents per six-pack and 20 cents per bottle of wine).

Although modest, these tax hikes would increase over time and eventually may limit heavy drinker who see their weekly alcohol budget justification for college student, and even country + social drinker for storage sites. "Studies show that all these groups respond to price, "says Wagenaar.

Even a slight decline in drinking may have a major impact on public health. If millions of people living in an area consumed half drink less per week, on average, small differences in alcohol intake – and intoxication – can cause large drops in the overall injury rate area, says Wagenaar.

There is some evidence that improvements in tax may reduce unhealthy behaviors, even for people who are dependent. increases in taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products have shown that reducing the rates of smoking and influence of heavy smokers to cut back or quit.

In a new study published in the American Journal of public health Wagenaar and his colleagues analyzed data from re-50 tests examine the link between increases in taxes on alcohol and the rates of drinking problems relating to the illnesses, including death, car crashes, STDs, violence, crime and suicide. most of the studies that were conducted between 1995 and 2004, seen the alcohol tax increases in America.

One of the research – led by Wagenaar itself — focuses on Alaska, one of several countries have implemented significant alcohol tax Investigators found status increases. alcohol-related dipped in 1983 and 2002, immediately after the tax increase. increase in 1983, which upped the imposition of tax on a bottle of beer from four to six cents, is connected with 23 fewer deaths-29% decrease.
